What you'll do:
Develop and implement comprehensive legal strategies to support the organisation's business objectives and ensure compliance with South African laws and regulations. Lead and manage the legal and compliance teams, fostering collaboration and professional development. Oversee risk management initiatives, analysing potential legal risks and developing mitigation plans to protect the company's interests. Advise senior management on corporate governance matters, regulatory changes, and emerging legal issues affecting the retail sector. Review, draft, and negotiate commercial contracts to safeguard the company's rights and reduce exposure to legal disputes. Coordinate dispute resolution efforts, including litigation management and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. Ensure adherence to statutory and regulatory requirements, embedding compliance frameworks within business operations. Promote ethical business practices and organisational integrity, aligning compliance policies with sustainability goals. Engage with external legal advisors, regulators, and industry bodies to maintain updated knowledge and influence regulatory outcomes. Provide regular reports to executive leadership on legal risks, compliance status, and strategic legal initiatives.

What you bring:
Legal degree (LLB) from a recognised university; admission as an attorney or advocate is essential Minimum 8-10 years' post-qualification experience in corporate law, preferably within the retail sector Proven expertise in compliance management, regulatory frameworks, and risk mitigation strategies Demonstrated leadership experience managing multidisciplinary legal and compliance teams Strong understanding of commercial contracts, dispute resolution, and litigation management Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic business environment Proficient knowledge of South African corporate governance and statutory requirements High ethical standards with a focus on promoting organisational integrity and sustainability Strategic thinker capable of aligning legal and compliance functions with business objectives
